Most STIs are asymptomatic Generally, the symptoms of STIs can include:

Particular types of STDs such as HIV cannot be cured and are deadly, but some can be treated with antibiotics or antivirals. Symptoms can vary and can often be silent.

STD & STI Testing & Results

The type of test requested by your doctor depends on the symptoms and risk factors. Our doctor will usually ask questions about your sexual history and then talk you through the type of test requested and any treatment prescribed.

STI tests usually involves urine test and genital or anal swab test which you can take yourself. Occasionally a blood test will also be included in your testing.

Sometimes a clinical examination may be required by the doctor and occasionally they may take additional swabs.

Finally, your doctor will discuss options of following up results and timing of repeat testing.

Prior to completion of the consult, your doctor will discuss different options of following up for your results. These will be back within 3 to 5 days. It is often recommended for patients to return for a follow up consultation in order to ensure that all results are followed up and ensure treatment has been successful. HIV, syphilis and hepatitis serology blood tests can take up to 12 weeks to turn positive. Your doctor may discuss with you about any requirements for repeat testing.

 

STI Treatments

Treatment for an STI is usually simple with a course of antibiotic tablets. Occasionally, there may be a requirement for antibiotic injections. Genital warts can be treated with liquid nitrogen (freezing) or with cream.
